Red Winged Blackbird
A red-winged blackbird grips a reed against pale wash, its epaulette showing orange-red at the shoulder — the badge the male flares when he sings and hides when he does not. Under nine inches square. The reeds are drawn in a few fast vertical strokes and the paper is left bare across most of the sheet. Walsh gives the field mark its full colour and lets everything else stay unresolved.
