Kathe Fraga's solo exhibition at JG Art Gallery was a sustained look at a practice that resists easy summary. Her lacquerware panels are built up over weeks — layers of plaster, paint, stamps, and gold leaf that imitate and depart from Chinoiserie, the European interpretation of East Asian decorative traditions.
The technique requires patience that few painters maintain. Fraga applies layer after layer, each one obscuring and revealing the one before it, until the surface holds a depth that rewards close looking. The show brought together 18 works spanning her current series. Several remain available. Inquire for current inventory.
