Slender trunks stand in a band across the middle distance and the canopy above them is built almost entirely from rectangles — short flat blocks of sap green, cream and olive, laid side by side with the ground showing between. It is a different mark from the curved boughs Smith uses elsewhere, and it does something specific: light reads as gaps rather than as glow. Below, a pale watercourse winds through a floor of violet, sage and bone. Nothing is described in detail and the wood is completely legible, which is the trick of the whole picture.
