The surface under moving light

This view is built only from real photographs of the work, each lit from a different angle, so you can move the light yourself and watch the real surface answer. It is being captured in the studio and will appear here. Until then we show nothing rather than an imitation.

Two hawks cross inside a drawn circle over a field of smoke-stained paper patched together in rectangles, a pale disc at the upper right. Sixteen by twenty-four. The birds are drawn in fine ink line — the printmaker's training showing — against a ground he has smoke-stained and assembled. The circle is a recurring device: it gives the animals somewhere to be without giving them a landscape.
