The most saturated painting Smith has here. Cadmium yellow crowds the entire upper third, magenta and crimson burn through the middle band, and beneath them snow is laid in blue-white knife strokes with sap green dragged through. There is no atmospheric recession and no attempt at one — the colour sits flat and forward, which is what makes an aspen stand in October look the way it does. Slender trunks run vertically through all three registers and stop the picture from becoming pure pattern.
