The river running over rock, gold foliage massed above, deep shadow beneath the far bank. Wallis paints the water as flat interlocking shapes of cream and pale grey rather than as anything transparent, and the effect is right — fast shallow water over stone does read as a mosaic of hard edges. The Sol Duc is on the Olympic Peninsula and this is its colour in October.
