A cut field running back to a dark treeline under a wide pale sky, the stubble in bands of ochre and bone, one small stand of trees breaking the middle distance. Philpott has said he is attracted to real views rather than contrived ones, and this is the test case: a mown field is not a picturesque subject, and he does not improve it. The whole picture rests on how the light lies along the cut rows.
