Working boats at the La Conner docks, hulls and pilings doubled in the slough, a low wooded bank behind. Nine by twelve. La Conner sits on the Swinomish Channel and the water there is tidal and brown rather than blue — Wallis paints it that colour rather than prettifying it, which is why the white hulls read as brightly as they do.
