A red barn stands behind a field of lavender-blue iris, dark firs to the left, violet mountains beyond. The paint is at its thickest here — loaded on with brush and knife until it stands off the canvas — and the iris field is built from hundreds of short vertical strokes rather than a wash. Currier calls this side of his practice the one controlled by the muse within rather than by the subject in front of him.
