The surface under moving light

A small panel — twelve inches square — with a pale root form drawn against open walnut grain, the wood left largely bare around it. At three hundred and twenty-five dollars it is by far the least expensive way into Mann's work and it carries her whole method in miniature: a natural material chosen for its figure, and a natural form drawn onto it.
