Inside a wood: pale trunks rising through the full height, undergrowth worked in detail at the foot, gold light behind. Twenty-six by forty inches. There is no clearing and no view out. Philpott paints the interior of a forest as a screen rather than a space, and the eye is given no route through — which is what standing in second-growth timber actually feels like.
