A mandrill sits facing us, hands folded in its lap, and in those hands is a yellow chick. The face is the achievement — the ridged blue and grey muzzle, the amber eyes, the sulphur ruff — painted with real anatomical attention against a plain buff ground. The chick is barely three inches of paint. Juvonen gives the ape no expression to read and lets the size difference carry everything. Whether the title is affectionate or a held breath is left entirely open.
