The Columbia Gorge in October: a dark basalt ridge dropping to the river, cadmium and orange burning along its lit flank, deep blue-violet in the shadow. Eleven by fourteen. The contrast is extreme and it is not exaggerated — that light on that rock at that time of year does behave this way, which is his whole argument about real views.
