The surface under moving light
This view is built only from real photographs of the work, each lit from a different angle, so you can move the light yourself and watch the real surface answer. It is being captured in the studio and will appear here. Until then we show nothing rather than an imitation.
These maples speak to me every autumn — I work into the color with bold, gestural strokes, letting crimson and coral and deep rose build texture across the canvas until the branches find their own spread and weight. I sketched the scene en plein air first, then carried that felt rush of the season back to the studio, where the landscape could speak for itself. There is color everywhere here, even where shadow pools beneath the canopy.
