I work layers of fern and stem into the textured surface — rust, olive, the quiet brown of forest floor — and at the center, a small junco rests, still and watchful. These are the creatures that share this place with me, part of the habitat I want to leave a record of before it slips from sight. My hope is that pausing here offers a moment away from the noise of the world.
