A white dress against a dark ground, and the ground is not plain — it carries a repeated impressed texture across its whole surface, close-packed and regular, that resolves at reading distance into something like rows of marks. The dress is worked in thick white with the skirt flaring wide. Where the red dress sits on emptiness, this one is set against a field of something almost written, and the contrast between the two paintings is the point of having both.
