The surface under moving light
This view is built only from real photographs of the work, each lit from a different angle, so you can move the light yourself and watch the real surface answer. It is being captured in the studio and will appear here. Until then we show nothing rather than an imitation.
I work into the unknown with each layer — here, the wax and heat pulled these white lines and spirals up out of the dark, tracing something like a field or a current, where one tone meets another. I keep smoothing out the high points, adding and excavating, until the surface itself holds the memory of every pass of the torch. It isn't planned so much as arrived at.
