The literal version of the metaphor. Gothic vaulting rises the full five feet of the canvas with stained glass burning between the ribs, the whole interior rendered in transparent colour and spiralling linework. Guild's forest paintings are described as cathedral interiors; here she paints the building itself, and the handling is identical — the same fracturing of light through structure, the same refusal to let the architecture stay solid.
