Five inches square, and painted with real ornithological attention — the rufous flanks, the iridescent gorget, the needle bill, the tiny feet gripping a bare twig. Set against her studio work, these small studies show how much the whimsy is a choice rather than a limit. Her surname means screeching bird; she is also, by her own account, very allergic to them.
