Pale trunks marked with dark eyes stand against a band of amber foliage, and below them the snow is not white but blue-violet shot through with cream. Smith puts her warmest colour at the top and her coldest at the bottom, then runs the trunks vertically through both so the eye has to cross the temperature line repeatedly. It is a small painting doing a large painting's work, and the blue in the snow is the reason it does not look like a Christmas card.
