A hillside of dry gold grass with dark firs standing along its crest against a flat cobalt sky. Twenty by forty. Two colours do the entire painting and the value gap between them is enormous. Philpott has said he wants to show how a simple patch of sunlight transforms an everyday view; this is an ordinary eastern-slope hillside and the light has done exactly that.
