The surface under moving light
This view is built only from real photographs of the work, each lit from a different angle, so you can move the light yourself and watch the real surface answer. It is being captured in the studio and will appear here. Until then we show nothing rather than an imitation.
Even stripped of color, this smoke tree holds its own kind of richness — I find the grays deepening, the whites opening up, the whole form alive with movement in the marks. I sketch this close to home, then carry that felt presence back to the studio, letting the landscape speak for itself. The gesture is everything; the tree breathes through it.
