Two panels, each carrying a single pale root mass drawn against near-black, hung as a pair. The two root systems are similar and not identical — the same species, the same treatment, different growth. Mann's Forest Portraits usually give a tree its whole body; here she gives only what is normally buried, twice, and lets the comparison do the work the title asks for.
