Bottles ranked on a shelf against a dark ground, glass catching light along their shoulders, a warm interior beyond. Twelve by nine inches. Ingalls gives each bottle a single lit edge and lets the rest go, so the shelf reads as a row of highlights before it reads as objects. The title is affectionate about a subject painters have used for four centuries.
