The river runs straight away from the viewer between banks of summer trees, its surface almost perfectly still and carrying the sky in pale blue and white. The composition is symmetrical and McShane does nothing to disguise it. Where her coastal paintings are about weather, this one is about stillness, and the single vanishing point is doing all the work.
