Backlit Firs
A small painting worked as densely as her large ones. One sienna trunk holds the centre, its bark mottled in ochre and umber, with thinner trunks stacked behind it; the foliage is teal and olive in short curved passes. Behind all of it the light is warm — gold shading to lavender — so every tree is read as a silhouette with colour still in it. The floor is blue-violet. At sixteen inches the paint is as thick as on a canvas four times the size, which is either stubbornness or generosity.
