Dead End

Carole Wade

Her largest canvas: a street ending in a bank of deep blue firs, a DEAD END sign standing yellow against them, snow banked along both verges and a scatter of red-roofed buildings at the left. The trees are painted as one continuous blue-black mass with no individual branches. Wade puts the brightest thing in the picture — the sign — directly in front of the darkest, and everything else arranges itself around that collision.
