Bluff Above The Shore
A pale sandstone bluff in cream and lavender runs behind a screen of trees, and the water beyond it is the palest blue in her work. The trees are the structure — sienna trunks leaning at slightly different angles, canopy in deep green blocks — and everything behind them is thinned almost to watercolour weight. It is the airiest picture in the group. Smith usually builds her light at the centre of a dark frame; here the light is behind everything and the frame is only a few trunks wide.
