Maestra
A small figure stands at the far left of the base, arms lifted, mid-gesture — and out of that gesture a crimson ribbon springs up and loops over into a heart nearly three times her height. Schultz gives her almost nothing: no face to speak of, a red dress, a body caught in the act of conducting. The whole weight of the piece is in the empty air she has just filled. The ribbon is patinated a hot oxblood against the warm wood and black stone of the base, and it is cantilevered far enough that the eye keeps checking it will hold. A maestra makes something appear by moving her arms. That is the entire sculpture.
