Love Story
The largest and quietest of Schultz's bronzes. A seated woman bends over a book in her lap, head down, shoulders rounded, one foot tucked back under the stone she sits on. Where his other figures throw themselves outward, this one folds in. The patina is the surprise: a mottled pale blue-white, granular as weathered limestone, so at a distance the bronze reads as carved stone and only resolves into metal up close. Sited outdoors it will hold that ambiguity all day. The title suggests a narrative and the sculpture withholds it — we are watching someone read one, not have one.
