Hanging on to Happiness
A small figure in a red dress leans back hard against a cluster of oversized balloons — crimson, acid green, magenta, gold, orange — that float up and away to the right and very nearly take her with them. The balloons are polished to a mirror finish while she is left matte, so the light in the piece belongs entirely to the things she is trying to keep. Schultz cantilevers the whole mass out over the end of the base, which is the joke and also the argument: the composition should not stand up, and the only thing anchoring it is her heels. Funny at first glance. Less so on the second.
