A Place To Relax
A cafe terrace under a row of umbrellas, a single figure seated at the left, the whole scene worked in high-key green and cream against pale ground. Gouache dries matte and Wallis then varnishes it, so the surface goes glossy over paint that was never wet-looking to begin with. The umbrellas are the composition — five discs at slightly different angles, and everything else arranged beneath them.
