A Swift and Flowing Renewal
Ribbons of blue and slate move across a smoke-stained ground, the paper itself smoke-stained to warm sepia at the edges and left ragged. Fourteen by eighteen. McMeans stains his paper with smoke before he paints on it, so the surface arrives already aged and every clean colour sits on something that has been through fire. The forms here are water rather than animal — one of the few works where he leaves the creature out.
