Salvaged old-growth cedar, shou sugi ban charring, embedded black glass — the anchor piece of Material Mediations. The charred surface reads like geological time compressed; the glass interrupts that surface with a different darkness. McConnell sourced the cedar from Pacific Northwest demolitions, the age of the wood a condition of the work before the first mark was made.
