Girl with Mandolin
Freda takes Picasso's title and answers it in her own language. The figure and instrument are resolved through overlapping circles and arcs — a compositional structure entirely different from the cellular mosaic she uses for animals, and closer to the analytical Cubism the title invokes. The palette is warmer than the rest of the Sanctuary group: cadmium yellow, dusty rose, slate blue, and a grey that holds them apart. The face is downturned and quiet while everything around it is in motion. The homage is real but not deferential — Picasso fractured the figure to show several views at once; Freda uses the same arcs to hold one.
