Ground Squirrel

Barbara Duzan

A ground squirrel sits upright on its haunches with a seed held in both forepaws, tail curled up behind, cheeks visibly full. The stripe down the back is worked into the bronze rather than painted on in patina, so it survives handling. At four and a half inches this is among the smallest things Duzan casts, and the posture — the specific way a squirrel turns a seed while eating it — is observed rather than invented.
