recycled red cedar house siding, acrylic paint. Horizontal cedar grain in brown and tan. A carved concave depression filled with gradient dye: orange-red at top transitioning through peach and yellow to pale green at the base. Turquoise-green acrylic on the carved interior rim catches differently from different angles. McConnell carves into the wood before he colors it — the depression is not decoration but a decision about the material’s interior.
