Here, A Sea Turtle is My Father

Britt Freda

A green turtle crosses both panels of the diptych, and the seam runs down the middle of the composition rather than being hidden at an edge. The shell is her mosaic method at its most systematic — scutes of burnt umber, gold and olive, each outlined, tessellating outward from the spine. The water behind is made of the same vocabulary in cooler tones, pale blue and grey ovals packed edge to edge, so animal and element are built from one material and separated only by temperature. The head is the exception: modelled, particular, the eye dark and open. Everything else is pattern; the face is a portrait.
