A river bend with a bright green shallows and an ochre gravel bar, dark forested bank rising behind, a scatter of small figures at the water's edge. Twenty by thirty. The green of the water is the loudest colour Philpott uses anywhere and it is accurate — glacial-fed rivers in this region really are that colour in summer.
