Somnium Serpentis

Charissa Brock

Somnium Serpentis is part of a series where I explore the linen spiraling technique I have developed over the last 28 years of working with bamboo. In this series I am inspired by the DNA structure, seashells, and the unique and complex method used to create these pieces. The spiraling forms change depending on the number of bamboo strips used, their length, curvature, layering, and the placement of handmade glass beads, becoming increasingly complex. Each glass beads reflects the structure back to the viewer and catches light, highlighting the internal pattern. This piece has thin steel cable running through it hand hangs from the ceiling by Awakara grips. Its best if it has some wall space for its shadow.
