The Kiss (Geoduck Shells)

Britt Freda

Two geoduck shells in close contact — the largest work in Freda’s group at JG at 50 × 30 inches. The shells are rendered with the full attention of her endangered species practice: watercolor and ink over graphite, gold leaf placed where the light needs to shift, etched text in the surface carrying the biological and cultural record of the geoduck. At close range the text becomes legible — population data, habitat notes, fragments of language. At distance the composition reads as pure form: two curved masses, a dialogue between them. Mixed media on paper — watercolor, ink, graphite, and gold leaf.
