The Pearl Divers
Two long figures swim across a coral-red field patterned with pale starbursts, their bodies drawn in black outline and filled with turquoise and jade. They are horizontal, weightless and turned toward each other. Fisher works the ground in marker and paint so the whole surface reads as textile — the divers are not in water so much as woven into it. The pattern behind them never breaks for the figures, which is what makes the picture feel submerged.
