Wetlands
A yellow-headed blackbird grips a reed against soft ochre and green, painted in oil rather than acrylic and much more tonal than her studio work. Sixteen by twelve. The bird is exact and the marsh behind it is barely indicated. She always carries a pen and sketchpad — through study in France, teaching in Japan, and a bicycle crossing of the United States — and this is what that habit produces when it turns into paint.
