Wishing Stone

Alfred Currier

A raven stands on a stack of balanced stones against a pale ground, twenty by ten inches. The stones are painted smooth and the bird thickly, so the two occupy different physical surfaces on the same canvas. Currier paints ravens as often as tulips and gives them the same treatment as the field workers: simplified, dark, and never subordinate to what they are standing on.
