The Artist Alexandra Squire

Alexandra Squire is an abstract painter whose work is defined by the pairing of vibrant colors with muted tones — a tension she uses to build compositions that are, in her own words, "simple yet deceivingly complex." Working primarily in acrylic on canvas and wood, with many pieces finished under multiple coats of hand-sanded resin, Squire builds richness through process: each layer is added deliberately, the blending organic and unhurried.

Her influences are formal and personal in equal measure. Mark Rothko and Piet Mondrian gave her the permission to tell a story without depicting one — to let color carry meaning and leave the painting open to interpretation. Her grandmother, also a painter, gave her the first and most direct evidence that making art was something a person in her life actually did. The two strands meet in her studio practice: rigorous in execution, open in intent.

Before becoming a full-time artist, Squire worked as a news anchor in Nevada. She subsequently earned an MBA from American University in Washington, D.C., and it is from the Washington metropolitan area that she has built an exhibition record that now spans galleries nationally — from Jules Place in Boston to Studio E Gallery, Illumine Gallery, and Orleans Gallery. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections throughout the United States.

The titles of her large-scale works are Roman numerals — DCLXXIX, CDXLII, and so on — a deliberate choice that keeps the viewer's experience unanchored by subject, free to encounter the color relationships on their own terms.
