Soul Portraits — visual memoir as commission
Deborah Hake Brinckerhoff grew up in Vermont and has lived in Salt Lake City for more than twenty years. She earned her BFA in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and has owned a fine art painting business for twenty-five years, with formal gallery representation for thirty of those years.
In 2019 she left the galleries to sell privately from her own studio — a deliberate move to close the distance between her audience and her work. Connection is the through-line: her Soul Portrait commissions are visual memoirs designed to help people see and commemorate their own life stories, and her broader practice has been a way to speak about trauma and healing without speaking. "The most important part about painting," she has said, "had never been about gaining recognition."
