The exhibition
No blueprints. The form arrives on its own.
Parvin, raised in Iran's hillsides and along the Caspian coast, paints straight onto raw canvas — no sketch, no plan, the paint often poured directly. Charissa Brock hand-splits harvested bamboo into abstract forms that echo ancient tools and vessels. Different materials, one way of working: trust the material, trust the memory, and let the form find its shape.
Two artists who begin without a plan — and finish somewhere neither could have drawn.

Parvin

She grew up in the Iranian hillsides, with visits to the Caspian Sea coast that still surface in her work. Story illustration at Chouinard gave way to advertising, then fashion, then fine art — where she settled into working without preliminary sketches, often pouring paint directly onto the canvas. Collected by Microsoft and Boeing executives; exhibited across Florida, Montana, and Washington.
Charissa Brock
Bamboo Sculpture · Portland-area, Oregon
Working with bamboo since 1999, she harvests and heat-treats each cane herself before splitting it using traditional Japanese techniques — building abstract wall and hanging sculptures from wood, glass, waxed linen thread, and paper. A BFA in Glass and an MFA in Fibers underpin work that draws on landscape, archaeological artifact, and bamboo's own growth patterns, asking what story an object carries forward.
