Adolescent Immortality
A girl in a pink swimsuit is upside down on the back of a black horse, palms flat on its rump, legs straight up. The horse stands square and unbothered. Juvonen paints it as near-silhouette against a flat cream ground with no horizon, no shadow and no setting — nothing to explain where this is happening or why. The paint is opaque and matte, laid on with little visible incident, and that plainness is the whole strategy: the more ordinary the handling, the stranger the event. Nobody in the picture thinks anything unusual is going on.
