After the Rain
No figure, no animal, no incident. A wide band of cloud in salmon, ash and warm grey occupies four fifths of the canvas above a dark strip of land and water. Juvonen paints weather the way he paints an ape — one subject given complete attention and everything else reduced to a ground for it. The cloud is built in soft opaque passes with the edges left unresolved, and the horizon is a single unbroken dark line. It is the same painter as the stacked animals, working with the surrealism switched off.
