Close Friends
A moose seen close, three-quarter on, with a magpie standing on its antler. The moose is painted with care — the heavy muzzle, the loose dewlap, the dull warm brown of the winter coat — and the bird is crisp black and white, the only sharp edges in the picture. Behind them, nothing: flat cream to all four sides. Juvonen keeps doing this, and the effect is consistent. Remove the habitat and two animals stop being wildlife and become a pairing you have to account for.
